Bicentennial Park Walk

June 8 @ 9:30 am - 12:00 pm

Renowned author and geologist Dr John Martyn will lead this walk and explain why Bicentennial Park is integral to Friends of Ku-ring-gai Environment (FOKE) GeoRegion project.

West Pymble’s Bicentennial Park was once the site of a quarry that excavated heavy duty rock to build roads and railway lines.

Today the site reveals evidence that this quarry was a basalt dyke formed millions of years ago when super-hot magna baked and recrystallised to form hard, white quartzite over Hawkesbury Sandstone.

Learn too how this site’s geology created Bicentennial Park’s endangered Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest.

Dr John Martyn is author of the books Sydney’s ‘Natural World, Field Guide to the Bushland of the Lane Cove Valley’ and ‘Rocks and Trees’.

Meet at the entrance to Bicentennial Park, West Pymble, next to carpark via Prince of Wales Drive off Lofberg Rd (near Ryde Road).
