Ku-ring-gai has a new Mayor and Deputy Mayor, and some new and returning faces making up the Council.

The positions of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Ku-ring-gai Council were decided at the first meeting of the new Council on Tuesday 11 January.

Councillor Jeff Pettett from the Comenarra ward was elected Mayor and Cr Barbara Ward from the Gordon ward was elected as Deputy Mayor.

Councillors Jeff Pettett and Cedric Spencer stood for the mayoralty, with a majority of votes ultimately going to Councillor Pettett. Councillors Barbara Ward and Christine Kay nominated for the position of Deputy Mayor and Councillor Barbara Ward was elected by a majority vote.

Mayor Jeff Pettett and Deputy Mayor Barbara Ward will serve in their respective roles until September 2023.

Mayor Pettett was first elected to Ku-ring-gai Council in 2012 on a platform of providing new community facilities.

A long-time resident of Wahroonga, Mayor Pettett has strong links with community and sporting organisations, serving as coach and Junior President of the Kissing Point Angels Baseball Club.

Mayor Pettett is a qualified accountant, a Fellow of the Institute of Accountants and a chartered tax adviser with the Tax Institute of Australia.

Deputy Mayor Barbara Ward was elected to Council in the December 2021 elections. She has lived in Gordon for 30 years and has extensive experience in the corporate and not-for-profit sectors.

Speaking after the Council meeting, Mayor Pettett said it was an honour to serve the people of Ku-ring-gai.

“As Mayor I aim to lead the Council through collaboration and listening to the community,” he said.

“Our residents have gone through a lot in the last two years, and during its term the Council is committed to achieving projects that benefit this generation of ratepayers and those who follow.”

Mayor Pettett added that providing new facilities for Ku-ring-gai would be a priority.

“I am confident that the public will see real progress on major projects such as the Lindfield Village Hub and the St Ives youth precinct.”

Councillors also nominated various representatives for Council committees at last night’s meeting.
