The Tempted Tamper

The phrase all good things come in small packages rings true for East Killara’s The Tempted Tamper, a cosy joint serving up speciality coffee, all-day brekkie and lunch. Its menu highlights include the cafe’s famous stacks such as smashed avo with whipped feta, broccolini salsa on soy lineseed and roasted halloumi, homemade base, baby spinach, eggs on sourdough. If that’s not enough to entice you then the pulled pork Benedict, shakshuka or French toast with whipped vanilla ricotta, fresh seasonal berries, espresso caramel, toasted pistachio and crushed meringue should do the trick. For an on-the-go lunch grab one of its delish-looking wraps filled with tandoori chicken, basil pesto chicken, bulgogi or salmon. Oh and don’t forget, the cafe’s always supporting local artists so you might across some cool stuff to take back home.

What started as a home-based needlework among three friends in October 1976 has grown in strength over 40 years later. The Crewel Gobelin’s been at its current location – 9 Marian Street Killara – since 1996, offering all the perks of a speciality needle workshop, evolving with the taste of its customers. A visit to the store will take you to a colourful world of patterns and kits, threads, fabrics and laces to satisfy all of your embroidery needs. Although its workshops with local needlework tutors have been cancelled due to COVID-19, check with the shop to see when they’re resuming again.

Marian Street Theatre

Passers-by may wonder why Killara’s Marian Street Theatre is abandoned, given its long history and importance to our community. The 280-seat venue was first constructed in 1906 as a hall before being turned into a theatre in 1965 to play a significant role as a cultural hotspot for North Shore. But, what you might not know is Ku-ring-gai Council is trying to work with the Save Marian Street Theatre Committee – a group of local residents and theatre lovers – to develop a plan for the venue’s future. This includes raising funds to upgrade the theatre to include multiple performance spaces, a creative learning centre, a theatrical rigging system and more. We would love nothing more than to see the plans come to fruition.
