The Tony and Oscar Award winning musical, inspired by the lives of the actual von Trapp family, The Sound of Music is set to arrive on Sydney’s North Shore.
Willoughby Theatre Company is presenting the iconic musical for a limited season at The Concourse, Chatswood this May, in a production that is set to sweep audiences off their feet once again as they are transported to the hills of Austria for an evening of love and nostalgia.
The Sound of Music tells the uplifting story of Maria, a young woman who finds her true calling as a governess to the von Trapp family and falls in love with their widowed father. Featuring some of the most famous songs ever performed on stage, including “My Favorite Things”, “Edelweiss”, “Do-Re-Mi”, “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” and the title song.
Directed by Adam Haynes, who has helmed some of Sydney’s biggest community theatre musicals of recent years including Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and Catch Me If You Can. Providing incredible movement on stage is respected choreographer Janina Hamerlok, while the show’s unforgettable score and harmonies are expertly crafted under the musical direction of Callum Tolhurst-Close.
Featuring a talented cast of well-known Sydney performers for the production, including Felicity Caldwell (Fran, Strictly Ballroom & Sophie, MAMMA MIA!) in the leading role of Maria Rainer. By her side is Marcus Hurley (Jean Valjean, Les Miserables & Chris Scott, Miss Saigon), as the Captain, and Tisha Kelemen as Mother Abbess (Rosie, MAMMA MIA!) both accomplished performers who have graced stages across the country. Over 12 young performers make up the rest of the von Trapp family members.
Director Adam Haynes said, “We are thrilled to bring this timeless classic to the stage with an all-star cast and crew of local talent, who are dedicated to bringing this timeless story to life for both old and new generations to enjoy. I feel an immense responsibility to do justice to this cherished musical, so it’s an honour to contribute to the rich legacy of The Sound of Music”
