If you’ve still got a sweet tooth after Easter, it’s worth heading to Westfield Chatswood to find out what the line out the door at Godiva Chocolate is all about. We can confirm it’s their chocolate soft serve ice cream – just for a start!

GODIVA chocolate has been loved the world over for almost a century. As the official history goes in 1926 “intrepid chocolatier Pierre Draps Snr. began perfecting the delicate art of pralines from his confectionery workshop in Brussels. Born into the world of chocolate, Pierre’s sons, Joseph, Francois and Pierre Jnr. honed their skills alongside their father.” The name Godiva came from Pierre’s long-haired wife, who had been given the nickname Lady Godiva by her hairdresser.

The family continued to gain a reputation for their chocolate, and in 1939 Pierre created the Signature Lait chocolate for the film premiere of Gone With The Wind.

The first Godiva chocolate boutique was opened in Brussels, Belgium in 1945, and within a year the famed GODIVA Truffe Originale had been created. Consisting of “intense dark chocolate mousse encased in (even more) dark chocolate and then rolled in pure cocoa powder… the innovative approach changed the industry forever.”

GODIVA went on to become the official chocolatier of the Royal Court of Belgium, and its fame grew around the globe. By the 1970s it had stores in Paris, New York, Tokyo and more.

It’s taken some 40 years since then for GODIVA to arrive in Australia, and the first store opened in 2017 in Melbourne, and now, finally, on the North Shore of Sydney with the opening of GODIVA Chatswood just before Christmas.

Two months later the black ropes remain outside keeping chocolate fans in an orderly queue, and the lines haven’t dissipated. The store is incredibly inviting, with wall to wall chocolate and a servery display case of the hand-crafted chocolates, each a work of art in itself.

According to retailworldmagazine.com.au, it was designed “by award-winning architecture and design studio, Russell & George, with gold (GODIVA’s signature colour seen around the world), white and caramel hues flowing through the space, complementing GODIVA’s delicious products.”

Apart from the boutique shopping experience, customers can also order drinks and soft serve ice cream – and this is likely the cause of the current queues. Their chocolate soft-serve ice cream is absolutely worth the hype!

Other soft serve flavours include Mango and Raspberry, Cookies and Cream, and Caramel and Crispy Pearls. There’s also Chocolixirs (iced drinks) in various delectable flavours, Tea Crushes in fruity flavours, and regular tea and coffee, along with GODIVA hot chocolate.

If you’re after something a little different, GODIVA is also known for their chocolate dipped pretzels, choose from milk chocolate, diced almonds, crushed cookies or caramel pearls.
